Restorations can be very expensive, or relatively inexpensive, depending on the condition the window is in.  Availability of old glass or lead no longer in production is another issue.  If a piece is painted, I can usually replicate that since old glass paint is still available, however matching colors takes time. The sooner you fix a leaded glass piece the better (and less expensive it is).  As a window starts deteriorating, it first stats to move and pull apart, then the glass starts to break, and it becomes much more difficult to remove and transport. I don't do any woodwork, and I prefer you get the window to me at the shop.  Let me know if you need help with these things.

$50 Consultation - I come to your house, evaluate your window, and give you a rough estimate for the restoration.  If you bring the window to the shop the consultation is free.  Putting the window on a ridged board is the best way to transport it.

This is just one example of a restoration project, every restoration is different.

P9080171This window was in rough shape.  Many broken glass pieces, and the lead was bent, broken, or missing.  It was obvious that the window was installed in its original place by 3 massive rebars extending horizontally across the piece, and then trimmed out-it had no frame.  The clients wanted this to become a framed interior hanging piece, so the rebars could be reduced a bit.  They also requested a few gold pieces of glass put in because we knew we had to replace several broken panes and had the opportunity to change the color scheme a bit.

After cleaning the window so I could see the broken glass, I found it was 2 shades of blue-who knew?  It also became apparent that there was so much damage that it would be more cost effective to remove all the old lead, and rebuild the window using the original design.  The original glass was not available so we chose to use a similar textured, lighter blue.  The photo shows how much of the original window was left after taking it apart.

Adding the gold colored glass requested by the client, and the light blue glass, as well as the glass saved from the old window, the color design was changed.  I called the client for them to ok the new look-they were very pleased.

New lead and rebar were added, and then the window was puttied.  Steel reinforcement was added on the straight sides, and reinforced lead was used on the curved top.  Notice the rebar that runs across the piece goes past the edge of the window to be integrated into the hardwood frame.

Restoration complete and strong.  Can't wait to see it in it's custom made frame hanging in front of a large window.
